Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has officially inaugurated the newly remodelled Abuja City Gate in the Federal Capital Territory. This ceremony took place on Thursday, July 9, 2026.
The Abuja City Gate is a concrete national monument that serves as the symbolic entrance to Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja and a ceremonial pavilion where incoming foreign dignitaries and heads of state are formally welcomed into the country. It was built in 1991 under the military administration of General Ibrahim Babangida to commemorate the official movement of the nation’s seat of power from Lagos to Abuja. The landmark was originally designed by the architectural firm Studio for Architects.
According to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of FCT, the brain child behind the transformation of the national landmark is the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. He further revealed that she urged him to renovate after noticing the landmark during her travels.
“The day she called me, she said, ‘Minister, you have been travelling; is that how the city gates of other countries are?’” the Minister said.
While Wike’s statement accurately acknowledged Senator Oluremi as the brain child of the national landmark remodelling, through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), Senator Oluremi has also championed a series of grassroots, human-centred projects targeting healthcare, education, and economic security to ensure every citizen can achieve their dreams.
