Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, disclosed to the press about raising over N20 billion to complete the National Library project. This occurred during the lunch date with the press on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2025, at the Presidential villa, Abuja.
Last week, Senator Oluremi announced that people who wish to celebrate her 65th birthday with gifts should instead convert them to cash and donate to the Education Fund. She said the project is built on love, motivated by the impact of libraries on her life as a teacher and while growing up.
Debunking the rumours that the project is a political ploy, Senator Oluremi stressed that this is not the first time she has raised funds for causes close to her heart. For her 45th and 50th birthdays, she raised N50 million to complete the National Sickle Cell Foundation Centre and N200 million for the New Era Foundation and other charities, respectively. She insisted that hers is to help drive funds.
“I have played my part in this project, and believe Nigerians can raise the funds needed to complete the Library. This is not just a project, but a national treasure that will serve generations to come,” she said.
The National Library was established in 1964 to preserve national publications and support research. For 65 years, it has faced setbacks in funding delays, leading to uncompleted construction. The library project was initiated in 2006, but was halted after partial funding.
As a former teacher and Senator who served in the Senate Committee on Education for 12 years, Senator Oluremi described the project as a legacy close to her heart. She assured Nigerians that the construction will be completed within two years.
While the estimated target is N100 billion, Senator Oluremi calls on willing Nigerians to donate as the fundraising is still open till December 2025.ver N20 billion. This project is built on the motivation of the impact of libraries on her life while growing up and as a teacher.
