Summary

In a horrific case of male violence, 17-year-old Auwalu Muhammad removed the eyes of his 7-year-old sister, Rukkaya Muhammad. This incident has made Rukkaya permanently blind, while the perpetrator has been arrested.

Auwalu Muhammad, a 17-year-old boy from Bauchi State, has gouged out the eyes of his sister in an alleged attempt to perform money rituals. This incident occurred on Friday, October 17, 2025, in Wailo town, Ganjuwa local government, Bauchi State.

During the investigation, Auwalu confessed that he lured his 7-year-old sister, Rukkaya, into a bush, attacked, and forcefully removed her two eyes. He stated that he was influenced by certain individuals who promised him wealth if he carried out the act.

This brutal act of violence reflects the horrific forms of gender-based violence (GBV) that women and girls experience in Nigeria. The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Suliaman-Ibrahim, reported that 31% of Nigerian women aged 15-49 have experienced physical violence from men. In comparison, over 28% have suffered sexual violence at least once in their lifetime.

Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital has confirmed that Rukkaya has permanently lost her eyesight due to the incident. Alongside Auwalu, six other male perpetrators were arrested in relation to the crime: Garba Dahiru, Saleh Ibrahim, Muhammad Rabiu, Auwal Dahiru, Nasiru Muhammad, and Hassan Garba.
