Tuface Idibia announces separation from Annie Macaulay, sparking widespread reactions and support for Annie from Nigerian women.
Nigerian musician Innocent Ujah Idibia, popularly known as Tuface, has separated from his wife, Annie Macaulay. The pair, who have been married for 12 years, are now going their separate ways, marking the end of their long-standing union.
On January 26, the singer took to his official Instagram page to disclose the separation, stating that he and Annie had been separated for some time and had filed for divorce. The now-deleted post read:
“Annie Macaulay and I have been separated for a while now and currently filed for divorce,” he added. “I would grant a press release soon to say my story.”
Shortly after, another post emerged claiming his account was hacked. However, Tuface later went live on Instagram to affirm his initial announcement, stating his account had not been compromised and that he meant what he posted.
Tuface and Annie’s relationship has faced challenges over the years. In 2021, Annie removed her husband’s surname, Idibia, from her Instagram bio amid rumours of marital strife. She later reinstated the name.
Following the divorce announcement, Annie has received significant support from Nigerian women. Media personality Toke Makinwa took to her Instagram stories to show solidarity with Annie, urging women to take her side. Toke emphasised that sitting on the fence might only result in similar situations happening to other women, encouraging unity among women during such times.
Furthermore, actress Mary Remmy Njoku shared a strongly worded message aimed at 2face. She wrote:
“Bro, Annie has a family o! Your sisters-in-law are many, and we’ve stayed quiet out of respect for her tough choices. But since you’ve decided to humiliate her at her lowest, no wahala. It’s your choice. Just make sure she’s healthy and okay. Because when the time comes, we’ll have plenty of questions for you!”
The announcement has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many women expressing sympathy for Annie and others criticising the idea of enduring challenging romantic relationships and marriages.
@tunz wrote on X: “This 2face and Annie thing just preaches one solid thing: There is absolutely no reward in suffering and enduring with a man!!”
“She stood with that man through it all, and he’s leaving her now that she needs him the most. Look at how damaged she looked this season. Her whole world literally revolves around this man. 2face is so evil for this divorce smh,” @berv commented.
Popular women’s rights activist @sugabelly emphasised the potential disadvantages of women changing their surnames after marriage, pointing out how it could impact their identity in the long run.
“See why changing your name to a man’s name is stupid? After making a man your whole personality, when he wants to get rid of you, he suddenly remembers your maiden name,” she wrote.
@_Phoenixblvck noted that younger women should learn from the experiences of others, urging them to prioritise themselves and avoid making similar mistakes.
“In this world, nothing for you as a woman if you don’t fight for and prioritise yourself. Don’t learn the hard way please,” she said.
Annie and 2Baba’s relationship began over two decades ago when she was just 15 years old, a vulnerable age where such dynamics often raise concerns about grooming. Despite this, their relationship continued and eventually culminated in marriage in 2013 during a lavish ceremony in Dubai. Even so, Annie’s first child is Tuface’s fifth child, as he had children with other women when they were together. In the recent release of Young Famous and African, a Netflix reality TV show, Annie Idibia revealed that she lost a twin pregnancy. However, together, the duo share two children.
Currently, the pair have unfollowed each other on social media, validating the divorce announcement.
