Thirty-six female law graduates from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have made their mark in the 2024 Nigerian Law Bar examination. With their significant number, these women outshined their male peers, who are small in number.
This achievement reflects a growing trend of women excelling in disciplines once considered male-dominated. It also marked the institution’s strongest academic performance in recent years. Notably, female graduates account for it, reaffirming women’s dominance in academic and legal spaces.
The outstanding scholars were celebrated on October 1, 2025, at the Faculty of Law Boardroom, UNILAG, where lecturers, alumni, and students gathered to honour their success. The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Abiola Sanni, SAN, described the graduates’ performance as “stellar, reflecting the Faculty’s rigorous academic standards.”Â
Each of the women received a commemorative medal and a congratulatory handshake, a symbolic celebration of their personal achievement and institutional pride.
Traditionally, Law is perceived as a male-dominated career due to its patriarchal attitude, gender bias, and consistent lack of mentorship and support for women. But over the years, there has been an increase of female participation. From pioneers like Chief Folake Solanke, Nigeria’s first female Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), to the present female First-class graduates. This career path has witnessed remarkable changes.
