The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that, effective January 1, 2026, it will partially suspend the issuance of certain U.S. visas to Nigerian nationals in accordance with Presidential Proclamation 10998, which addresses national security and border controls.

On December 23, 2025, the embassy updated its website to indicate that visa issuance to Nigerian citizens outside the United States will be affected under the new rules. However, no visas issued before the effective date will be revoked.

The partial suspension applies to a range of non-immigrant visas, including business and tourism visas (B-1/B-2), and visas for students and exchange visitors (F, M, J categories). Certain immigrant visas will also be included under the proclamation, but specific exemptions apply.

Exemptions from the policy include:

  • Nigerians holding valid U.S. visas issued before January 1, 2026
  • Lawful Permanent Residents (green card holders)
  • Dual nationals applying with passports from unaffected countries
  • Special Immigrant Visas for eligible U.S. government employees
  • Participants in major international sporting events.

The policy affects other countries alongside Nigeria under the same proclamation. Nigerians may still submit visa applications and attend interviews, but they may be found ineligible for visa issuance or entry under the new rules if they fall within the suspension criteria.

Summary: The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced a partial suspension of visa issuance to Nigerian citizens, effective from January 1, 2026. While applications and interviews will continue, many visa categories, including some immigrant visas, will be affected.
