USC Trojan Jazzy Davidson Wins USBWA’ Tamika Catchings of the Year

Nigerian-American freshman guard Jazzy Omolade Davidson of the USC Trojans has been named the 2025–26 USBWA National Freshman of the Year. She won the prestigious Tamika Catchings Award on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. She will formally receive the award at the upcoming USBWA College Basketball Awards Banquet on April 13, 2026.

The USBWA National Freshman of the Year award, officially known as the Tamika Catchings Award, is one of the most prestigious honours in women’s college basketball. It is hosted annually by the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), an organization of college basketball journalists. The award was officially renamed in 2020-21 in honour of Tamika Catchings, a legendary Tennessee standout, who was a three-time USBWA All-American and the association’s national freshman player of the year in 1997-98. The award recognises the nation’s most outstanding freshman women’s basketball player each season.

Jazzy is the second Trojan in history to earn the Tamika prestigious honor, and the first  freshman in the last 25 years to post a 30-point, 5-rebound, 5-assist stat line in an NCAA Tournament debut Her 31 points marked the most ever by a USC freshman in NCAA Tournament play and the second-most by any Trojan in tournament history.

“I’m just so grateful. I think it’s really just a testament to the people that I have around me. I have amazing teammates and amazing coaches who have poured into me so much this season. It’s not a one person thing. It’s a village of people that can make things like this happen,” the basketball star expressed her gratitude. 

With her win as the USBWA Tamika Catchings National Freshman Player of the Year, the basketball star joined other legendary winners of the prestigious award.
