But, women consistently battled the glass ceilings and achieved success in male-dominated workplaces. Perceived industries like politics, finance, aviation, tech, STEM, and among others seems unattainable for women because of the perceived patriarchal belief. However, women’s natural resilience, perseverance, and hardwork have recorded great achievements. Below are some of the leading women in male-dominated industries.
Chimamada Adichie (Author)
Perceived as a successful author, and distinguished literary master, Chimamada has claimed her place among successful authors in a male-dominated industry like the literary world. With a successful career spanning over two decades, she has published outstanding books like “Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun and Americana”. Her recent book “Dream Count” published this year has gained great attention and is one of the most sought-after literary pieces. She is also acknowledged as the daughter of Achebe due to their similar explorative themes of Nigerian identity, shared igbo heritage, and literary style. Her success is not only limited to writing. She has received numerous awards and honors including the Orange Prize for fiction and a spot on Time Magazine as one of the 100 influential people in the world in 2012.
Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala (Finance)
The finance world cannot be completely discussed without mentioning the name of the iconic Ngozi. Her name resonates powerfully in the world of finance and her unparalleled expertise and leadership especially as the former Nigeria Finance Minister has left significant positive traces in Nigeria’s history. Ngozi made history as the first female to become Director-General of the World Trade Organisation and has been making reform policies to make WTO more effective.

In a male-dominated industry such as Nollywood, Kemi has shown her resilience and strong ability to aspire younger upcoming actors as one of the most successful directors in the film industry. She has directed movies that have casted Nigerian biggest stars such as Tiwa Savage, Wizkid, Falz, and Omawunmi. Rebecca Enonchong (Tech)
This Cameroonian tech guru built her career from being a curious teenager to becoming the founder and CEO of Appstech, a global tech company and one of the prominent and leading champions in African tech and investment. Recognized for remarkable progress in STEM, Rebecca is one of the leading females in the tech world.
Zeinab Badawi (Journalist)
Acknowledged as one of BBC leading journalists, Zeinab is a Sudanese who have worked extensively in the British media for four decades. She is famous for her programs popularly known as ‘Hard Talk and Global Questions’. She has received numerous honorary awards and is the current chair of the Royal African Society. Additionally, she has produced and presented 20-tv series about Africa history through her own production company for BBC World News.
Yemisi Akinbobola (Entrepreneur)
