Summary
Over 12 armed men invaded the Federal University of Lafia and reportedly raped female students in an off-campus hostel, in a brutal overnight attack. The Nigerian Police, through PRO SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, have promised increased patrols and said the matter will be escalated to the Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police.
In a horrifying escalation of insecurity in Nasarawa State, over 30 female students of the Federal University of Lafia were reportedly raped when heavily armed men invaded off-campus hostels in a series of brutal attacks.
The attack occurred on July 26, 2025, when a gang of twelve armed men, travelling in a convoy of vehicles, stormed female student communities in Gandu, Maraba, and Akunza Quarters, areas located close to the university and a military checkpoint.
The assailants carried out their operation for hours, going from room to room, raping female students, inflicting injuries, and stealing valuables, including phones, money, laptops, and personal appliances.
One student reportedly had her left foot severed, while several others sustained life-threatening injuries. Many more were left physically and emotionally traumatised. The victims of the latest attack are currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Lafia.
The attacks, which began two weeks earlier, have occurred at least three times, with each incident growing in scale and violence. It was reported that the criminals strike in the middle of the night and operate unhindered for hours.
Meanwhile, panic has gripped parents and guardians, some of whom have begun withdrawing their children from the university over safety concerns.
At the time of filing this report, no arrests have been made. However, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has assured the public that he will raise the matter with the Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, promising increased police patrols in and around the affected student areas.
