Summary: Iyabo Obasanjo has declared her intention to contest the 2027 Ogun State governorship election under the All Progressives Congress. She expressed confidence in securing the party’s ticket and said she wants to address governance gaps in the state.
Nigerian academic and former senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, has declared her intention to contest the 2027 Ogun State governorship election under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rescheduled Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with the Presidential and National Assembly polls set for January 16, 2027, and the Governorship and State Assembly elections to follow on February 6, 2027.
Speaking during a radio interview on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese Ijebu, the former senator representing Ogun Central said she is confident of securing the party’s ticket and winning the election.
Iyabo recently completed her e-registration as a member of the APC in Ibogun, Ward 11, Ifo Local Government Area, formally signalling her return to active politics 15 years after losing her Senate re-election bid in 2011. She said her decision to run for governor is driven by the need to bridge governance gaps in Ogun State and positively impact residents’ lives.
“The position I’m going to run for is governor, and I believe it fits the skills I bring to the table. As Ogun citizens, I hope that when I’m governor, I will touch your life either directly or indirectly in a way that will improve your lives,” she said.
On the agitation for power shift to Ogun West, Iyabo Obasanjo noted that the region has not produced a governor since the state’s creation nearly 50 years ago. However, she maintained that power rotation is not enshrined in the constitution, while promising to support the emergence of a governor from Ogun West after her tenure.
Addressing her chances of clinching the APC ticket amid other aspirants, she said no candidate can claim absolute certainty but expressed determination to secure the nomination.
Other prominent figures believed to be interested in the 2027 Ogun governorship race include Modele Sarafa-Yusuf, Solomon Adeola, Sarafadeen Tunji Ishola, Gboyega Isiaka, Tunde Lemo, and Ladi Adebutu, among others.
