The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has confirmed its involvement in a disturbing case of a man who sexually abused a 12-year-old girl in the Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State.

The teenager was reportedly raped by 25-year-old Farouk Alayande, also known as Lumi, at 13 Oguntaiwo Street, Anisere Ayobo Ipaja, Lagos, on May 9, 2025.

The survivor returned from school that day and went to buy water from the shop in Farouk’s grandmother’s house before she was lured inside by Farouk and raped. Farouk’s grandmother, who can no longer walk, asked the girl to come inside the shop to take the water and assist her in attending to someone else waiting for a soft drink.

While the girl was trying to give the customer the soft drink, Farouk  Alayande walked in and told the survivor that there were no cold drinks in the store’s fridge and that she should follow him inside to see where the cold drinks were.

When she followed him inside, Farouk grabbed her, covered her mouth, and raped her. When the survivor’s mother noticed bloodstains on her body, she asked her if she had fought with someone, as she had had her menstrual flow a week before the incident. The survivor then told her mother what had happened, and she was taken to Igando General Hospital.

As the incident attracted attention, neighbours gathered around the scene. However, when the police arrived, the neighbours refused to let the police arrest the perpetrator. After the arrest, some boys in the area gathered and attacked the survivor’s two brothers.

According to the DSVA, the incident is under active investigation in collaboration with the Nigerian Police Force. The case has been handed over to the Gender Desk Unit, and the reported perpetrator is currently in custody at the Ayobo Police Station.

In a show of support for the survivor, the DSVA stated that the young girl has been referred to the Ipaja Family Support Unit and is receiving psychosocial support services. She has also received medical attention, and the agency confirmed it remains in direct contact with the survivor’s family to ensure their continued support throughout the process.

The DSVA commended the vigilance of the public in bringing the case to light, emphasising the critical role of community awareness in protecting children from abuse.

“The Lagos State Government reaffirms its unwavering commitment to securing justice for survivors of sexual violence and ensuring that perpetrators are held fully accountable under the law,” the agency stated.
