469 Kano Children Died From Malnutrition In Six Months — Ruqayya Aliyu

A paper presentation presented by Professor Ruqayya Aliyu Yusuf of the Department of Information and Media Studies, Bayero University Kano (BUK), at a media sensitisation training, has revealed that 469 children from Kano State have died from malnutrition between January and July, 2025. These deaths were caused by poor nutrition, which continue to threaten children’s survival in the state.

The paper presentation titled “Understanding the Basics of Behavioural Change: Towards Improving Malnutrition in Kano State” witnessed Professor Ruqayya highlighted how malnutrition and poor dietary practices remain a major public health challenges in Kano. She stated that Nigeria ranks high on the Global Nutrition Index, noting that malnutrition is primarily caused by poverty, food insecurity, poor dietary habits and inadequate health awareness among caregivers.

Referencing a 2025 UNICEF reports, the don revealed that about 40 per cent of children under 5 years in Nigeria are stunted, while the figure is significantly higher in Kano at 51.9 per cent.
