Nigeria’s basketball legend, Sarah Ogoke, has officially announced her retirement from the national team, ending a remarkable 15-year career that redefined African women’s basketball.

Sarah, the only player in Africa to win five consecutive Fédération Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) Women’s AfroBasket championships (2017, 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2025), made the announcement in Lyon, France, during a ceremony organised by Xejet, official partners of the senior women’s national team, D’Tigress.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) congratulated the former D’Tigress captain, OON, praising her accomplishments and her contribution to Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball. Chairperson Mallam Shehu Dikko said,

“The entire country is very proud of Sarah and all she has done over more than a decade as a national team player.”

Sarah Ogoke retires at 35 as an accomplished athlete and medical doctor. The D’Tigress will honour her with a victorious send-off over Germany in their final game at the FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament.

Her career has been inseparable from Nigeria’s success on the continent. Between 2015 and 2025, D’Tigress recorded a 29-game unbeaten run in AfroBasket competitions, placing Nigeria’s status as Africa’s powerhouse in women’s basketball.

Beyond Africa, Sarah elevated Nigeria’s presence on the global stage. At the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, she scored 22 points to lead D’Tigress to their first-ever World Cup victory over Turkey, a landmark moment in Nigerian basketball history. She also represented Nigeria at the 2020 Summer Olympics, competing against the world’s elite.

In the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament in France, Sarah contributed off the bench against the Philippines, scoring six points in eight minutes, including the final three-pointer in the win. A record-breaker and stalwart of the national team, Sarah Ogoke’s legacy as the first Nigerian player to win five consecutive AfroBasket titles ensures her place among the greatest figures in the history of African basketball.

Beyond basketball, Sarah Ogoke balanced elite sport with academics, studying Biology (Pre-Medicine) at Georgia Tech and advancing into podiatric medicine.
