Armed Gang Abducted 23 Children from Orphanage in Kogi

Summary: An armed gang abducted 23 children from an unregistered orphanage in Kogi State. Fifteen were recovered through security operations. Eight children are still missing.

An armed gang abducted 23 children from an unregistered orphanage in Kogi State on Sunday, April 27, 2026. Fifteen of the children were recovered through coordinated security operations.

Eight children remain missing, and the attack also resulted in the abduction of the orphanage’s owner, whose current status remains unclear.

Kogi State’s information commissioner, Kingsley Fanwo, stated on Monday, April 28, 2026, that the orphanage was operating illegally in a bushy environment without the knowledge of relevant authorities.

According to BBC reports, no armed group has publicly claimed responsibility for the attack, though security analysts suggest Boko Haram’s involvement.

Kingsley, in his statement, urged orphanage operators to engage appropriately with appropriate government agencies, especially in the current security climate.

Mass abductions from schools have become routine, particularly in the north. NFM documented the case of bandits abducting and killing teen girls in Kaduna, which reveals a pattern of mass abductions targeting vulnerable children across the country’s northern region.
