The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced a new policy to allow candidates to use their personal computers for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) from 2027. This development was disclosed by the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, during the board’s Policy Meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions held on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Abuja.

The policy titled “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) allows candidates to bring and use their laptops during UTME instead of relying solely on computers provided at their designated exam centres. The initiative aims to drastically reduce capital and logistics costs for equipping physical test centres and to address recurring candidate complaints about sudden system power-offs and technical glitches during the exam.

To curb and prevent examination malpractice, the JAMB Registrar explained that a special flash drive will be inserted into each personal device to block access to unauthorised applications and external storage, restrict internet access, and monitor candidate activity. He noted that mobile phones, tablets, and other smart devices would not be allowed into the examination centres.

He also added that other innovations would  be introduced into the national exam by 2027 for a seamless examination experience.
