A viral account circulating on social media alleged that Warrant Officer Yusuf M.O. died on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, while serving a punishment ordered by her Officer in Charge, Lt. Commander S.T. Abashim. The incident was said to have occurred at the Nigerian Navy Sick Bay in Gowon Estate, Ipaja, within the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

According to the viral account, WO Yusuf was absent from duty on May 19, 2026, and resumed work the following day, where she was confronted by Lt. Commander Abashim over her absence.

She explained that she had been experiencing health challenges and required medical attention. Her explanation was reportedly not accepted, and she was allegedly ordered to carry out physical labour under harsh weather conditions as punishment. She reportedly became dizzy and weak during the exercise and later died.

Reacting to the viral claims, the Nigerian Navy issued a statement on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, through Director of Naval Information Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, describing the accounts as false and misleading.

“The Nigerian Navy has noted with concern the circulation of false and misleading claims regarding the unfortunate death of a female rating allegedly linked to the actions of a female lieutenant commander,” the statement reads.

The Navy confirmed WO Yusuf’s death but stated that the established facts and actual cause of death would be communicated to the deceased’s family, while stressing the need to respect medical confidentiality. No cause of death, autopsy report, or independent medical finding has been made public as of the time of writing
