Navy Lieutenant Queeneth Ofor, a member of the 63 Regular Course and a specialised combat officer, has made history as the first woman to command a vessel in the Nigerian Navy. Her achievement is a major milestone in a traditionally male-dominated military branch.

As a combat officer, Queeneth specialises in underwater warfare and sub-specialisation intelligence. In 2011, she made history by being shortlisted among the first batch of female regular combatants admitted into the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA). She has also completed her rigorous multi-year officer training as a member of the 63 Regular Course.

In her feature interview with Al-Jazeerah, the Lieutenant highlighted her role as the Officer in Charge (OIC) of a sea-going vessel and advocated for increased female participation in core naval operations. As a trailblazer in a traditionally male-dominated military branch, she has been celebrated for breaking gender barriers and inspiring other female officers to pursue senior operational roles in the armed forces.

As a vessel commander, Lieutenant Queeneth’s responsibilities include safeguarding Nigerian maritime borders, tactical navigation, and overseeing the command and strict discipline of all sailors under her charge.
