Vivian Chilaka, an award-winning National Diploma student at the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor (CONSALOR) in Anambra State, was brutally murdered in her apartment on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
Vivian is a brilliant nurse whose academic excellence recently earned her a scholarship. On her matriculation day, she won six out of seven academic awards presented to outstanding students. She was highly recognised as an extraordinarily gifted student with a bright future ahead of her.
According to reports, the victim was stabbed multiple times, resulting in injuries around the femoral artery, leading to excessive bleeding and her tragic death. Potential cues suggested that she may have known her attackers and struggled with them before she was eventually overpowered. A bloody knife, suspected to be the murder weapon, was discovered near her room, while her blood was seen on the stairs and the ground leading to a shallow well where her body was dumped.
In the video clip shared online, the nursing student’s room was disorganised with a mat spread beside a student’s mattress on the floor, and a pair of black shoes were at her doorstep. Beside the shoes was a blue drum, possibly for storing water.
Reports indicate that a dog who lives in the compound, known to bark at strangers and unusual movements, did not bark on the night of the incident. This raises serious concerns and suggests that the perpetrators may be familiar faces within the area or compound.
Femicide remains a growing national crisis, with an estimated 1 woman or girl killed every 49 hours across the country. Subsequently, the Elegant Nurses Forum (ENF) released a press statement condemning the murder of Vivian and demanding justice and government intervention. The union explained that the gruesome murder of Vivian Chilaka has shattered her dreams and led to the loss of a nursing student.
“Beyond the horror of her death lies an even more painful story. Miss Vivian Chilaka was not just another student. She was a young woman who had already endured unimaginable hardships,” the statement reads.
Elegant Nurses Forum also demanded a transparent, professional investigation into the case, immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators, institutionalisation of a scholarship or academic excellence award in Vivian’s name, and others.
“The death of Miss Vivian Chilaka is not merely a loss to her family; it is a loss to the Nursing profession, to Anambra State, and to Nigeria as a whole. A nation that fails to protect its brightest young minds risks losing its future,” the organisation said.
At the time of writing this report, the Anambra state police have yet to release any official statement regarding the murder of Vivian. Although the investigation is currently ongoing, the perpetrators have yet to be found or arrested.
