Claim: An X user (@felixherbt) posted a video of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, speaking at an event, with the caption attributing these words to her: “I want to leave Aso Rock by 2031. By God’s grace, I have enjoyed enough to sustain me for the rest of my life.” The post then added: “You think they have your interest at heart? You must be joking!”
Verdict: Misleading. The video is authentic and from the correct event, but the caption significantly alters and fabricates part of her statement. Tinubu did say she wants to leave Aso Rock in 2031 by the grace of God. She did not say she has “enjoyed enough to sustain me for the rest of my life.” The actual remarks focus on hoping to enter a better Nigeria she can enjoy as a woman in her 70s, citing airport improvements as evidence of progress, while supporting her husband’s potential re-election.

On 24 October 2026, @felixherbt, an X user, posted the video clip from a Gbaramatu Voice broadcast of the event held the previous day, with the altered quotation and critical commentary. The post gained substantial engagement, over 300,000 views, thousands of likes, and hundreds of reposts/quotes at the time of review.
Replies and quotes largely treated the captioned words as accurate, using them to criticise the First Lady and the Tinubu administration as self-serving and disconnected from citizens’ hardships. Some users highlighted the contrast between the attributed personal statement and broader economic difficulties in Nigeria.
The event was the commissioning of the Abuja headquarters of the PBAT Door-to-Door Movement, a grassroots group mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu’s anticipated 2027 re-election bid.
NFM decided to fact-check due to its potential to invite misogynistic attacks on the first lady during the election period.

Naija Feminists Media reviewed the video and found that the core speech states:
“I want to leave Aso Rock, in 2031, by the grace of God, and enter a Nigeria that me as a 70-something-year-old woman will enjoy.”
She continued by referencing visible improvements (especially at airports), her desire for convenient travel, and a light-hearted comment that critics who do not see progress might need “Bola Tinubu eyeglasses” (referencing a past eye-care initiative). She formally commissioned the campaign headquarters “for the victory of Mr President come 2027.”
The phrase “I have enjoyed enough to sustain me for the rest of my life” does not appear in the video of this speech, nor in contemporaneous reporting of the remarks. Earlier comments by Tinubu (for example in September 2026) about wanting to “enjoy Nigeria in old age” or work so the country improves for her later years exist in a different context and wording; they do not match the specific “enjoyed enough to sustain me” formulation attached to the 2031 Aso Rock statement.
Multiple independent news outlets (including Daily Trust, TheCable, Leadership, Legit.ng, Vanguard, and others) reported the same core statement from the speech, matching the video audio and available subtitles/transcripts.
The video itself is genuine footage of her speaking at the PBAT event. The misrepresentation occurs in the textual caption, which compresses, alters, and adds a self-enrichment claim absent from the original.
Conclusion
Remi Tinubu expressed a desire to leave the Presidential Villa in 2031 (implying a second term ending then) and to experience an improved Nigeria as an older woman, while campaigning for her husband’s re-election and pointing to infrastructure progress. The X post correctly identifies the general topic and uses authentic video but misquotes her by inserting a claim about already having “enjoyed enough” personal sustenance. The post is part of a trend of gendered disinformation against women in public life that misquotes them in an attempt to invite public criticism against them.
