On June 16, 2026, the Delta State Police Command detained a 60-year-old man in Asaba, the Delta State capital, after he raped his neighbour’s two daughters, aged 11 and seven.
Human rights advocate Harrison Gwamnishu disclosed the development on Jun 16, 2026, stating that the girls’ mother became concerned after noticing unusual behaviour from one of her daughters. According to him, the woman discovered injuries and questioned the child about what had happened.
Harrison Gwamnishu, a Nigerian human rights advocate who has campaigned publicly on child protection and sexual violence cases across Nigeria, accompanied the family to the police and has pledged ongoing support throughout the legal process.
The 11-year-old remained silent at first about the abuse because the man had threatened her, before she disclosed to her mother that he had been raping her.
Further inquiries by the family revealed that the man had also raped the younger sister, aged seven. Harrison stated that he personally went to a Division, Asaba and commended the Juvenile Welfare Centre Department for ensuring the man remained in custody.
“Yesterday, Monday, I personally drove to A Division, Asaba, and commended the JWC Department for a good job in ensuring the suspect remains in custody,” he stated. He added that the man was due to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, stating, “Today (Tuesday) the suspect will be transferred to SCID where he will find his way to where he belongs.”
Harrison called on the Delta State Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development, and Princess Ajudua to take over the case and ensure the mother receives full support.
He stated that he had personally committed to covering the mother’s logistics for the case, noting that she wouldn’t have reasons to settle with anyone and withdraw this case.
This is not the first time a child has been raped by someone in a trusted position close to their home or family.
NFM previously reported that a Lagos State teacher, John Osifo, was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping an eight-year-old pupil under his care, after a Lagos court found that he had breached the position of trust he occupied and exploited the vulnerability of the child.
