On August 19, 2026, Esther Okereke, the presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM), pledged to increase Nigeria’s electricity generation capacity to 25,000 megawatts (MW) within her first 100 days in office if elected president in the 2027 general election.
On Arise TV, Esther Okereke pledged to address Nigeria’s persistent electricity crisis and improve power supply nationwide.
She said increasing electricity generation would be one of the priorities of her administration, stressing that reliable power is critical to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
Nigeria has continued to face challenges in the electricity sector, including inadequate generation capacity, transmission constraints, distribution losses and frequent power outages. The unstable electricity supply has also placed additional pressure on households and businesses that rely on petrol- and diesel-powered generators.
Esther Okereke’s proposed 25,000MW target would represent a significant increase from Nigeria’s current available generation, which has continued to fluctuate due to limitations across the power sector.
The NRM candidate is expected to campaign on a platform focused on improving infrastructure and addressing some of the country’s longstanding economic and social challenges ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Her 100-day electricity pledge comes as political parties and presidential aspirants begin to position their programmes and policy proposals ahead of the 2027 elections.
If implemented, achieving 25,000MW within 100 days would require substantial investment and improvements across electricity generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure, as increasing generation alone would not guarantee reliable electricity supply to consumers.
