Prominent Nigerian Chef, Chiamaka Nwakalor-Egemba, fondly known as Chef Amaka, has publicly opened up about her PCOS diagnosis and the harrowing experience she endured. She shared this information on Thursday, July 2, 2026, during an interview with Ify Mogekwu on the popular culinary and lifestyle show Food Therapy, hosted on Ify’s Kitchen YouTube channel.

According to the culinary expert, a missed menstrual period shortly after her marriage led to a doctor’s visit, where she was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). This condition led to visible changes in her body, including weight gain and a broader upper-body appearance.

Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), formerly known as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is a hormonal imbalance that occurs when the ovaries create excess hormones. Its symptoms include irregular periods, weight gain, acne, abnormal hair growth, infertility, darkening skin, and hyperandrogenism. Presently, there is no cure, but it can be managed through lifestyle changes, a nutritional diet, and medication.

During an interview, Chef Amaka revealed she was trolled and mocked for looking older than her husband.  “I was told I am the man of the house, that I beat my husband,” she said.

She added that some people questioned her husband’s masculinity because they had not welcomed a child and stated that the comments about her inability to conceive affected her emotionally.

“What made me cry was when they said my husband is not man enough to father a child. In my head, I’m like, all this because I’ve never conceived,” she said.
