Nigerian-American author Grace Bankole’s debut novel won the 2026 VCU Literary Award

Olufunke Grace Bankole, a Nigerian-American author, has won the 2026 Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Cabell First Novelist Award for her debut novel, The Edge of Water. The announcement was posted on the organisation’s Instagram account on July 1, 2026.

The VCU Cabell First Novelist Award is a prestigious annual literary prize that honours outstanding debut novels published during the preceding calendar year. The literary award selection involves a rigorous multi-stage process, including a longlist read by VCU MFA students, community members, and literary experts. The winner is ultimately selected from a three-book shortlist by a final panel of judges. The winning author receives a $5,000 cash prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to Richmond, Virginia.

Olufunke Grace is a graduate of Harvard Law School who famously walked away from her highly successful legal career to pursue her passion for creative writing. Before the publication of her debut novel, her work had appeared in various publications, including Ploughshares, Glimmer Train Stories, AGNI, Michigan Quarterly Review, New Letters, The Antioch Review, Poets & Writers, and elsewhere. She has also won the first-place prize in the Glimmer Train Short-Story Award for New Writers and was the Bread Loaf-Rona Jaffe Scholar in Fiction at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. She has been awarded an Oregon Literary Fellowship in Fiction, a Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation grant, and a residency-fellowship from the Sitka Centre for Art and Ecology.

The Edge of Water is a multigenerational epic that explores the life of a young Nigerian woman, Amina, who dreams of life in America and how a devastating storm tests the bonds of a family. The novel is set in two vibrant cities: Ibadan, Nigeria, and New Orleans, Louisiana. Its themes include: maternal bond, identity, spiritual syncretism, and fate and free will. 

Reacting to her win, the author wrote on her social media,

Having navigated nearly 20 years of creative ups and downs to arrive at the publication of my debut novel, it means the world to be recognised with an award that honours the excellence and imagination of the work as well as the journey of the first-time novelist. And to enter the lineage of such accomplished winners…wow.”

Grace will be awarded the prize during a public event hosted at Virginia Commonwealth University on November 12, 2026.
