Summary
Nigerian man Emmanuel Onwubiko has been sentenced to two years in prison for sexually assaulting an 18-year-old girl in Warrington, Cheshire, UK. This was after he boasted that such incidents go unreported in Nigeria. Beyond the two years imprisonment, he is also restricted to going near the survivor for 10 years, while he is placed on a sex offender list.
Nigerian man, Emmanuel Onwubiko, has been sentenced to two years in prison for sexually assaulting an 18-year-old lady in the United Kingdom. The assaults took place in 2024 in Warrington, Cheshire, when he repeatedly groped the teenager, touched her inappropriately and asked her sexually explicit questions.
According to the Liverpool Crown Court, Emmanuel Onwubiko groped her breast, bottom, and vagina on two occasions. When she objected, he dismissed her concerns, claiming that such behaviour would “not be reported” in Nigeria.
The teenager, feeling “physically sick,” hid in a bathroom and texted a friend a live account of the ordeal. She later fled to a family member’s home and reported the assault, prompting police involvement. Emmanuel denied all reports but was found guilty on five counts of sexual assault after a trial.
In court, the survivor delivered a moving impact statement, revealing that the trauma left her mentally broken.
“My mental health has significantly declined due to what happened to me,” she said. “Some days I feel as though I can’t get out of bed due to feeling anxious. My mind is always thinking about what happened to me, and it is as though I have constant flashbacks about what happened to me. I now feel a shell of my former self.”
In desperation, she found a church that performed baptisms on short notice, hoping holy water would “wash away the horrible feelings.”
Judge Gary Woodhall condemned the perpetrator’s actions, saying,
“From the very beginning of that day, you behaved inappropriately towards her. You demonstrated sexual attraction towards her. She was scared.”
Emmanuel Onwubiko had overstayed his UK student visa and was reportedly seeking a post-graduate visa to repay a loan. However, following his two years’ imprisonment for sexual assault, he was also placed on the sex offender register for 10 years and given a 10-year restraining order to protect the survivor.
