The Anambra State Government has denied claims that its security outfit plans to arrest women seen without bras or pants in public, calling the reports false and misleading. Press Secretary Christian Aburime reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting citizens’ rights and urged the public to disregard the misinformation.
Following the viral claim that its security outfit plans to arrest women seen without bras or pants in public, the Anambra State Government has come out to dismiss this claim as false.
On Feb. 17, 2025, a video which currently has 110k views started making rounds on X (formerly Twitter ). In the video, members of a security outfit were seen announcing plans to arrest women without bras or underwear, attributing the directive to the governor of Anambra state, Chukwuma Soludo.
Many Nigerians had previously reacted to this video, claiming the directive was ridiculous and would only open women to further sexual harassment.
“Another avenue to open up women to more harassment from men in the force. Like we’re not dealing with a lot already. What a disgrace,” X user Osas quoted.
“Another avenue created for touts to sexually harass our girls. @CCSoludo should get his priorities right. How does this affect the state in any way?” Chibuzo also remarked.
Christian Aburime, the Press Secretary to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, however, issued a statement hours later on Monday, Feb. 17, 2025, debunking the allegation, calling it “false and malicious.”
“The attention of the Anambra State Government has been drawn to a malicious and entirely false information circulating on social media platforms, claiming that ‘Anambra State Government begins arrest of girls who walk around without bras and pants before they start walking naked,’” the statement read.
Christian also described the claim as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and tarnish the government’s image. He reaffirmed that the Soludo-led administration remains committed to upholding all citizens’ fundamental human rights and dignity.
“The Anambra State Government, under the leadership of Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, remains committed to protecting the fundamental human rights and dignity of all citizens,” he stated.
“Although the government encourages decent dressing for all, it does not interfere with citizens’ personal choices of clothing or undergarments, as such matters are private and protected by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
According to the statement, the government also further urged the public to disregard the misinformation and avoid spreading false narratives that could cause unnecessary panic. The government also reiterated its focus on security, human capital development, and economic transformation, warning against the dangers of fake news.
