Armed bandits attacked villages in Zamfara State and abducted 20 women in Zurmi and Kaura Namoda. Troops and local vigilantes have launched a rescue mission to secure their release.
Armed bandits have abducted over 20 women in separate attacks across Zurmi and Kaura Namoda Local Government Areas of Zamfara State.
The incident occurred in Moriki town, Zurmi LGA, where 23 women were kidnapped while fetching firewood on August 2, at about 1:30 p.m. It was reported that the women were ambushed in the bush and taken to an unknown location.
The Moriki abduction came just hours after another coordinated attack on 16 villages in Kaura Namoda LGA between August 2 and August 3. During the assault, five people were killed, many others kidnapped, and domestic animals worth millions of naira were rustled. Witnesses noted that the bandits operated silently during the one-hour raids, without firing a single shot.
In Zurmi town, residents reported that 18 people, mostly women, were taken, while four were abducted in Dada village and two others from Gidan Shaho. Among those taken in Dada is a classroom teacher who was returning from work.
While local authorities and security agencies are yet to issue an official statement, troops of Operation Fansan Yanma, in collaboration with local vigilantes and other security operatives, have launched a rescue mission to secure the victims’ release.
