A General Court Martial sitting at the Headquarters of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu has sentenced Private Adamu Mohammed to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend, Ms Hauwa Ali.
The judgment, delivered by the President of the Court, Brigadier General Sadisu Buhari, followed weeks of deliberation and evidence review. The court found Adamu Mohammed guilty of murder, an offence punishable under Section 106 (a) of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
“Given this, the GCM has determined that the accused soldier, 21NA/80/6365 Private Adamu Mohammed, is hereby sentenced to death by hanging for the charge of murder,” the Brigadier General declared.
The court martial, which was inaugurated on February 18, 2025, by Major General Oluyemi Olatoye, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division, was convened to try personnel accused of offences not triable summarily.
In the same proceedings, another soldier, Private Abubakar Yusuf, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for robbery.
According to a statement from the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu, the 11-member panel thoroughly considered the evidence, the accused’s service record, and the plea for leniency before reaching its decisions.
Brigadier General Buhari emphasised that while the court had weighed all factors, the gravity of the crimes necessitated full application of the law. He reiterated the Army’s commitment to justice, discipline, and maintaining public trust.
