With 24 categories recognising both mainstream and niche genres like Coupé-Décalé, Bongo Flava, and Genge, the awards were a testament to Africa’s rich and diverse musical heritage.
South African singer Tyla was named Best Female Artist, a recognition of her originality and unique sound that has captivated audiences worldwide. She won the award ahead of strong contenders, including Makhadzi from South Africa, Chelsea Dinorath from Angola, Josey from Ivory Coast, and Nigerian stars Ayra Starr, Tems, and Yemi Alade.
Nigerian gospel powerhouse Mercy Chinwo won the Best Gospel Artist award and was praised for her soul-stirring and inspirational music. She triumphed over fellow nominees, including Spirit of Praise 10 from South Africa, KS Bloom from Ivory Coast, Ada Ehi from Nigeria, Bella Kombo from Tanzania, and IsraĂ«l Mbonyi from Rwanda. Additionally, her song “You Do This One” earned a nomination for Best Inspirational Single in the Headies Awards, further solidifying her influence in gospel music.
Nigerian sensation Ayra Starr further cemented her place as one of Africa’s top stars with another significant nomination. She was recognised alongside Seyi Vibez, Adekunle Gold, Tems, Chike, Simi, and KiDi. This comes after her recent triumph at the 2025 MOBO Awards, where she won Best African Act and Best International Act, proving her status as a global music force.
