Summary
Ayra Starr, Tems, and other iconic artistes, took centre stage at the 17th Headies Awards in Lagos. They won top honours in music and film categories, including Best Recording, Songwriter of the Year, and Best Movie Soundtrack.
The 17th edition of The Headies Awards lit up the Landmark Events Centre on April 27, 2025, in grand style, celebrating excellence in Nigerian music.
Hosted by acclaimed Nollywood actress Nancy Isime, the star-studded evening featured electrifying performances from top talents including Yemi Alade and Qing Madi. This year’s ceremony was not just a spectacle of lights and sounds. It was a landmark night for women in music, who claimed major awards and left their mark on the industry’s biggest stage.
Tems won Best Recording of the Year for her soulful track “Burning,” beating out heavyweights like Burna Boy and Ayra Starr. Rising star Qing Madi took home Songwriter of the Year for her powerful anthem “Vision,” edging out Simi, Llona, and Bloody Civilian.
Liya stunned audiences with her win for Best Vocal Performance (Female) for “I’m Done,” rising above top contenders Ayra Starr, Niniola, Simi, and Yemi Alade. In the visual category, Music Video of the Year went to Director Pink for “Egwu,” a vibrant piece that stood out among submissions from big names like Rema, TG Omori, and Dammy Twitch.
Women also triumphed in film music, with the Best Movie Soundtrack award going to “Tribe Called Judah Soundtrack” by TCJ and Abbey Wonder. They beat out soundtracks from Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre, Water and Garri, and others.
Beyond music, the night recognised humanitarian efforts. Michelle Mukoro (King Mitchy) was honoured alongside Temitola Adekunle Johnson for their impactful community work.
While the celebration was high, the award body left ten categories unannounced, including Best Collaboration, Best R&B Single, Best Performer (Live), and several regional and international artist awards. Still, the night belonged to the women artists, vocalists, songwriters, and visionaries who showed that talent and tenacity know no gender.
