Tare Korumene, a 51-year-old entrepreneur from Bayelsa, has been awarded a N240 million interest-free loan by Governor Douye Diri to support her eco-friendly hair extension business made from plantain stems.
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has approved a N240 million interest-free loan for 51-year-old entrepreneur Ms. Tare Korumene, who produces eco-friendly hair extensions from plantain stems under her innovative brand.
Ms. Tare, a Bayelsa native, began developing the plant-based hair extensions during the COVID-19 lockdown. Faced with limited resources and failed attempts with chemical softening and unreliable machine fabricators, she turned to organic methods. Despite setbacks including a devastating flood that destroyed her early equipment, she has continued to champion sustainable beauty, clean farming, and local empowerment through her venture.
The announcement was made during the launch of the Bayelsa E-Commerce Entrepreneurship Programme (BEEP), themed “Made in Bayelsa, Sold To The World.” Ms. Tare’s business, which transforms agricultural waste into sustainable hair products, caught the governor’s attention during a live product demonstration in Yenagoa.
“We have Brazilian hair made with chemicals. But now we have Bayelsa hair, made from plantain stems, using the full value chain of the plant,” Governor Diri said. “We will support you with a N240 million interest-free loan through Premium Trust Bank.”
