47-year-old self-proclaimed prophet, Adeleye Akingbaso, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old girl in Ekiti state.
Justice Blessing Ajileye of the Ekiti State High Court has sentenced 47-year-old self-proclaimed prophet Adeleye Akingbaso to life imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old girl.
The judgment, which was delivered on Monday in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, was rendered after finding him guilty of rape and coercion.
During the trial, the victim, whose name has been withheld, testified that Adeleye was her mother’s lover and often spent nights at their home. She recounted how, on one occasion, while her mother was on night duty, Adeleye had woken her up at midnight, falsely claiming she had wet the bed. He then applied shea butter to her private parts before sexually assaulting her.
The girl further said that Adeleye threatened to curse her and cause her death if she spoke about the incident. The following day, he returned to the house while her mother was away and attempted to assault her again. This time, she escaped and raised the alarm, drawing the attention of neighbours who alerted her mother, after which the sexual assault case was reported to the police.
During the trial, Prosecutor Taiwo Ariyo presented four witnesses, the survivor’s statement, and a medical report as evidence before the court. Delivering judgment, Justice Ajileye stated,
“This court finds the defendant guilty on both charges of rape and coercion and convicts him accordingly. This ruling should serve as a deterrent to others who believe they can escape the law.” Adeleye was then sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and three years for coercion, with both sentences to run concurrently.
