Summary: The Cross River State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended lawmaker Hon. Ovat Dickson Agbor over reported domestic violence against his wife, while police have confirmed his arrest and ongoing investigation.
The Cross River State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended Hon. Ovat Dickson Agbor, the lawmaker representing Obubra I State Constituency, over reports of him repeatedly beating his wife.
In a video that circulated widely on social media, Glory Agbor, Ovat’s spouse, was seen with a swollen face, which could suggest the result of domestic violence. The suspension followed a motion moved by Abia Constituency Rep Davies Etta and seconded by Odukpani constituency Rep Francis Bassey Asuquo during plenary on March 5, 2026.
While the Assembly did not publicly detail the incidents during the session, lawmakers described the reported behaviour as inconsistent with the ethical standards expected of members of the legislative arm of government.
One reported incident of Ovat’s battering spouse required intervention by the Speaker of the House, Elvert Ayambem, who was said to have driven to the lawmaker’s residence at night to rescue her and take her to the hospital.
During deliberations, lawmakers stressed the need for decisive action to protect the legislature’s integrity and reputation. Following discussions, the House resolved to place him on indefinite suspension from all legislative activities pending further investigation.
After the suspension, the Cross River State Police Command confirmed that Hon. Agbor had been arrested. Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Eitopha Akata, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said Agbor is currently undergoing interrogation.
“Yes, he is at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) undergoing interrogation,” Akata said.
Investigations into the situation are still ongoing.
