Diana Kubebea is not just a voice on the airwaves—she is a force reshaping the media landscape, mentoring the next generation, and advocating for gender equality. From her early childhood fascination with radio to becoming an award-winning presenter and humanitarian, Diana has defied expectations, shattered barriers, and cemented her legacy as a trailblazer in Kenya’s media industry.

Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated Industry

In an industry where women continue to face systemic challenges, Diana Kubebea stands as a formidable example of resilience and excellence. Her entry into radio was not by chance but by conviction. From the moment she went on air for the first time, she knew she was destined for it. The response from her audience was immediate and overwhelming—proof that she was not just another presenter but a voice that resonated.

Despite her undeniable talent, breaking into a male-dominated industry was no small feat. Women in media, particularly in radio, often struggle with unequal pay and limited career progression. Diana was determined not to be sidelined.

“It’s difficult being a woman in media, especially when it comes to remuneration,” she asserts. “But I’ve learned that if you can’t afford me, then don’t ask for my services.”

Her persistence paid off. She has twice been named Best Radio Presenter, a milestone not just for herself but for all women in Kenyan media. She was the only female nominee in her category—a stark reminder of the gender disparities that still exist. But Diana’s victory was more than personal—it was a statement.

Mentorship: Cultivating the Next Generation of Media Professionals

Diana does not just thrive in the industry—she builds pathways for others. As a mentor, she has nurtured young talent, ensuring that aspiring radio presenters have the skills, confidence, and knowledge to succeed. She takes immense pride in hearing her mentees apply the techniques she has taught them.

“Seeing my mentees flourish makes me incredibly proud. It’s like being a parent—I want to see them succeed and go even further than I have,” she says.

Her advice to young women entering the industry is unwavering: “Be unapologetically yourself. Your talent is your natural blueprint—don’t copy anyone.”

Driving Change Through the Diana Kubebea Foundation

Beyond the media, Diana has committed herself to advocacy and humanitarian work through The Diana Kubebea Foundation, an organisation dedicated to ensuring young girls receive uninterrupted education.

Her foundation provides:
Sanitary towels to keep girls in school.
Support for teen mothers, ensuring they continue their education or gain vocational skills.
Sexual and reproductive health education for both boys and girls.

Diana’s ambitions for the foundation are bold and urgent.

“I want to keep one million girls in school. I want to manufacture sanitary towels from recyclable materials. I want to build a safe haven for teen mothers and abused women. These are not dreams. These are goals, and I am actively working towards them,” she asserts.

Despite these efforts, the fight for gender equality remains an uphill battle. One of the biggest challenges she faces is that many survivors of abuse return to their abusers due to financial dependence or societal pressure.

Shaping the Future of Media

Diana understands the evolving media landscape better than most. As content creation shifts towards digital platforms, she predicts that radio will become more audiovisual, heavily influenced by social media and podcasts. However, she raises a critical concern:

“How trustworthy and original will the content be? Will it be about impact or just clout chasing?”

For Diana, content creation is not about chasing trends—it’s about authenticity and audience engagement. She actively listens to real conversations in public spaces, carefully observing societal shifts to create meaningful and relevant content.

A Legacy in the Making

Diana Kubebea is not just making an impact—she is leaving a legacy. As a media powerhouse, a mentor, and an advocate for girls’ education, she continues to challenge norms, push boundaries, and uplift those who come after her.

Her story is not just one of personal success; it is a blueprint for how women in media, advocacy, and leadership can command their space and demand change.

Diana’s voice is more than just a presence on the radio—it is a movement.
