In a video message to young Nigerians, Nollywood actress Adunni Ade encouraged them to embrace their success and never dim their light to make others comfortable. Drawing from her own experiences, Ade stressed that trying to belittle oneself or downplay achievements in an effort to fit in is a mistake, as the right people will celebrate your accomplishments while others will find reasons to hate regardless.
Nollywood actress Aduni Ade shared an inspiring message to the Nigerian younger people, encouraging them never to diminish themselves to fit into other people’s expectations.
In a video message, Aduni revealed that her advice to them has remained consistent for over a decade.
“Never dim your light to fit someone else’s standards. Never belittle yourself to fit someone else’s lifestyle.”
The A-list actress admitted that in her early years, she often downplayed her achievements and brushed off compliments to make others feel comfortable.
However, she emphasised that dimming one’s light does not win love or acceptance but instead robs individuals of their true selves.
“The right people will root for you even if your shine is blinding. And the wrong ones, they will hate you even if you whisper your success,” she said.
Aduni Ade stressed that everyone’s light is purposeful and should not be hidden. She urged young people to stop apologising for their success, confidence, and presence, reminding them that they are “not too much” but “just enough.”
“Your shine will not blind the right people. They will adjust their eyes. And the naysayers, let them squint,” she added.
The actress challenged her audience to reflect on their own experiences.
