Summary

Nigerian media personality and entrepreneur Eriata Ese recently used her Instagram platform to challenge the contradictory and damaging societal pressures placed upon women concerning marriage and motherhood.

Eriata Ese, a Nigerian media personality and an entrepreneur, has called out the contradictory society pressures women face regarding their marital status and decision to have children on her official Instagram account.

On October 13, 2025, Eriata posted a video with the caption “Two types of pregnant women, which one are you/ which one will you be ?”

Then a commenter chinazylilien posted, “everygirl just dey born anyhow without being married.”

Eriata responded to the user’s statement by challenging the judgmental narrative by listing factors such as trauma, abuse, anger issues, and the necessity of achieving mental readiness and self-worth before pursuing marriage.

She added, “You don’t know if I’m taking my time to study who I want to end up with, you don’t know if there’s something I’m waiting for to click before I say yes, I want to marry, you don’t know my fears and worries, you don’t know if I’m mentally ready.”

She described how women over 30 are criticised as single mothers if they choose to have children while unmarried.

â€śYou see this life, you are 30+, you are not married, they tell you to just have your kids and wait for marriage, so that your biological clock won’t start ticking,” she added. “You listen to them and have your kids, and you are 40+ with kids, they start shaming you that ‘oh, just look at you, you don’t even have at least one child, even if you didn’t see husband.”

She went on to assert that even when women successfully marry, they are still subjected to intense public judgment and gossip, with critics questioning the husband’s choice, asking why he overlooked younger girls or what he saw in a single mother.

She urged women to prioritise their happiness, live their lives and stop listening to critics.
