Falconets Advance to Final Round After 2-1 Win Over Senegal

Summary: Nigeria’s Falconets beat Senegal 2–1 to qualify for the final round of the 2026 U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers and will now face Malawi for a place in the tournament.

Nigeria’s Falconets have progressed to the final round of Africa’s qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after defeating Senegal 2-1 in the second leg of their third-round tie on February 14, 2026.

The victory in Diamniadio secured a 3-1 aggregate win for Nigeria, following their 1-0 triumph in the first leg in Abeokuta, Ogun State, seven days earlier.

With a 1-0 lead from the first match, the Falconets played a calm game away from home. Kindness Chinaza Ifeanyi scored in the 19th minute with a header from a corner to increase Nigeria’s overall lead.

Nigeria scored again in the 68th minute when Precious Oscar headed in from a corner, making it 3-0 on aggregate and putting the game out of Senegal’s reach. Senegal scored in the 76th minute through Sokhna N.T. Pene, but Nigeria finished the game strongly to win.

The result continues Nigeria’s impressive pedigree at this level. The Falconets have qualified for every edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup since its inception, finishing runners-up in 2010 and 2014, and reaching the semi-finals in 2012.

Nigeria had earlier eliminated Rwanda 5-0 on aggregate in the second round, while Senegal advanced past Algeria 6-0 over two legs to set up the clash. Nigeria will now face Malawi in the final round of qualifiers after Malawi defeated Guinea 6-2 on aggregate.

The winner of the Nigeria-Malawi tie will secure one of Africa’s four tickets to the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
