Summary

Emmanuel Gambo has confessed to the killing of 22-year-old UNN graduate Debbie, who was found dead and hidden under a hotel bed a week after her birthday.  Her close friend first reported on TikTok, the case has drawn outrage after Emmanuel Gambo attempted to frame Debbie as a prostitute and claimed her death was accidental.

A brutal case of femicide has shaken the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) community, as Emmanuel Gambo, now in police custody, confessed to killing 22-year-old Debbie, a recent graduate who returned to campus for her clearance just one day after celebrating her birthday.

The incident was first brought to the public’s attention by TikTok user @Z_e_e___, a close friend of the deceased, who has used her platform to demand justice and challenge the false narrative Gambo tried to spread. According to @Z_e_e___, Debbie went missing on June 14, the day after her birthday. A week later, hotel guests began complaining of a foul odour. Staff eventually discovered Debbie’s lifeless body hidden under the hotel bed, wrapped in a curtain and a towel.

In his police statement, Emmanuel Gambo claimed he met Debbie on campus and accompanied her to her house, where she allegedly said she didn’t want the night to end and suggested they get a hotel room. Emmanuel Gambo filled the hotel register with a fake name and contact information, which @Z_e_e___ strongly questions: “If you hadn’t planned evil, why register with fake details?”

Emmanuel Gambo claimed he paid Debbie ₦5,000 after sex and that she demanded ₦15,000 for a second round, leading to an argument. He admitted to strangling her during the altercation and said she hit her head against the cupboard before collapsing. He then wrapped her body in the hotel curtain and hid her under the bed. Before fleeing, he stole her iPad and a bottle of wine, throwing them over the window into a neighbouring compound, and used her phone to exit the hotel, telling the receptionist she had already left.

But @Z_e_e___, who has been vocal and emotional in her multiple TikTok videos, debunks these claims.

“Which hookup girl takes a bottle of wine to a hotel room?” she asks. The wine, she says, was brought by Debbie to celebrate her birthday, likely with someone she trusted. “Which hookup girl takes ₦5,000?” she adds, calling the idea both insulting and implausible.

She believes Emmanuel Gambo planned the murder, pointing out that using fake details at the hotel was not accidental. “This guy not only murdered her in cold blood, but he’s still lying about her name even after death,” she said.

In the wake of Debbie’s murder, more disturbing details have emerged. According to @Z_e_e___, several individuals who knew Emmanuel Gambo have come forward, saying he has a pattern of taking women to hotels, robbing them of their belongings, and disappearing.

“This is what this guy does,” she said. “He targets girls, steals their phones, their money, and I believe he was trying to do the same to Debbie. But maybe she caught him. Maybe she fought back. And he killed her.”

As the news spreads and public anger mounts, Debbie’s friends, family, and community are demanding justice.

“She was kind, gentle, and had her whole life ahead of her,” @Z_e_e___ said in a tearful post. “She didn’t deserve this. No one does.”

The Nigerian public is now watching closely, calling for a swift trial and the maximum sentence for Emmanuel Gambo.
