Feminist Damilola Onosowobo has criticised Nollywood actor Jim Iyke for claiming that single mothers cannot raise boys without male influence. She said on X that women can live independently, build wealth, and raise children outside marriage without stigma.

Feminist and Shop Bawsty co-founder, Damilola Onosowobo, has criticised Nollywood actor Jim Iyke over his claim that single mothers cannot properly raise boys without the involvement of a male figure.

Speaking in a recent interview with Okay 101.7 FM in Accra, Ghana, Jim Iyke said that women are not “built” to raise men alone, insisting that male influence is essential in the upbringing of boys.

“A woman can’t raise a man. You can’t, you’re not built for it. A single mother cannot raise a man properly.”

He added that while women are naturally nurturing, this alone is insufficient for instilling discipline and resilience in boys.

His remarks, however, sparked backlash, with Damilola Onosowobo taking to X to challenge the actor’s views.

“Men shame single mothers because men are desperate for marriage,” she wrote

Damilola noted that women can now live independently, build wealth, and enjoy life outside of marriage.

“If women can also have their children outside of marriage free of stigma, that’s fire.”

Jim Iyke’s comments have now fueled wider conversation online about single motherhood and the stigma surrounding women raising children independently.
