Summary

Priscilla Ojo’s conversion to Islam after her wedding to Tanzanian singer Juma Jux has sparked feminist reactions on social media. Gender advocates raised concerns of power dynamics including age gap, and marital expectations influencing her decision.

Tanzanian singer Juma Jux has opened up about the emotional and spiritual journey that led his wife, Priscilla Ojo, to convert to Islam following their widely celebrated wedding in April 2025. However, the revelation has sparked concerns across social media, with several feminist voices questioning the dynamics surrounding her conversion.

In a recent interview with Afrik Media, the musician revealed that Priscilla, daughter of popular Nigerian actress Iyabo Ojo, converted from Christianity to Islam as part of a personal and guided process that involved patience, mentorship, and religious education.

Juma Jux emphasised that her decision came after steady engagement with Islamic teachings, supported by devout individuals and scholars who mentored him on the proper approach to support her faith journey.

“Yes, a little bit,” Juma Jux admitted when asked if it was difficult convincing her to convert. “On the other hand, I was receiving lessons from religious leaders and people who are keen about religion. So there’s a way that they were teaching me with regards to how to convince her. So I took some time, she later on understood.”

The revelation has stirred widespread debate across social media, with many women voicing concerns that Priscilla Ojo may have been coerced into converting. The discussion has also reignited conversations about her recent changes including adopting a new surname, relocating to another country, and now, changing her religion.

Feminist @onnyhonnie noted on the issue on predatory age gaps and women marrying so young saying:

“Now tell me how any man is gonna convince you to change your whole belief system to his own when you wait till you are fully formed and well beyond your 20s to even contemplate marrying?”

@GoodieWifey added:

“It’s almost as if women don’t truly have an identity until they get married. You’re expected to give up everything- values, name, title, friends, property, bodily autonomy, even your faith – because of marriage & then some men will still insist you aren’t family enough?”

Other reactions criticised those defending the conversion as voluntary.

“People saying it’s her ‘choice’ are stupid af,” wrote @Rich_pips.

Another user, @onosowobo, pointed out the dynamics of relocation and power imbalance:

“This 37year old grown married male took this 24 year old young woman to a whole new country and people are acting surprised by this.”

X user @_chiceeeyyy summed it up:

“Now I see why some people were not okay with the age gap. Not only did she leave Nigeria for Tanzania, she dropped her name and has changed her religion. She’s no longer bearing Priscilla ojo she’s now bearing Mrs Hadiza Mkambala (idk if I spelt it correctly)”

Juma Jux and Priscilla Ojo tied the knot in a lavish white wedding ceremony in Lagos on April 18 and 19, 2025, which made waves across social media due to its glamour and high-profile celebrity attendance.

The couple, who reportedly met in 2024, quickly became one of the most talked-about cross-border celebrity unions between East and West Africa.
