Summary

Ayomide Adeleye, a 200-level student at Olabisi Onabanjo University, confessed to killing his friend Christianah Idowu in August 2024 and was reportedly remanded in Ikoyi Prison. However, FIJ investigations revealed he was not in prison due to delays by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. While an Instagram claim of his release went viral, Lagos police denied it, attributing confusion to another individual with the same name.

Ayomide Idowu, a 200 Level Philosophy student of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, who confessed in  September 2024 to killing Christianah Idowu, his friend and 300 Level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta was found not remanded in prison after investigations made by FIJ.

Adeleye invited his friend Christiana to his parents’ home on August 19. He killed and buried her in a shallow grave in his compound and then faked a kidnapping to extort money from Christiana’s stepmother, Rita Ozobia.

After the Nigerian Army and FIJ joined to capture and hand over to the Nigerian police in September, he confessed to the crime. What followed was a remand in Ikoyi Prison, Lagos State. On November 5, Seyi Omodara, the magistrate who granted the remand warrant, was absent in court when the police returned the suspect for an update on the advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

According to FIJ, the DPP was delaying the matter and had yet to issue a document for the matter to be transferred to the state high court for trial.

On December 9, an Instagram page @TrueCrimeDaniel claimed that Adeleye had changed his story and secured freedom. This video has been watched at least 172,000 times and received over 7,000 likes.

FIJ went on to investigate and found that Adeleye was not in prison, that the judiciary was slow in his dealings despite the warrant not expiring, and that he was able to secure a release.

FIJ also reported that they sent messages to Benjamin Hundeyin and Muyiwa Adejobi, spokespersons for the police at the Lagos Command and the headquarters respectively. On Saturday, the Lagos State Police Command claimed that Ayomide was still in prison.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said

“We can confirm that Ayomide Adeleye was charged with murder and was remanded for the same offence.

“It is also a fact that another person bearing the same name was remanded for a different offence and released in April 2024, long before the Ayomide we are talking about committed his offence

“An outfit that prides itself on investigation should live up to its name. Relying on ‘sources’ rather than the spokesperson of the Correctional Service would land you in this kind of misinformation.”
