Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has made history as the first woman sworn in as Chairperson of the Ghana Police Council, a key body advising on internal security and police leadership.

On June 10, 2025, Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, was officially sworn in as Chairperson of the Ghana Police Council by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama.

Her appointment marks a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to lead the Council, which advises the President on key policy matters related to internal security, including budgeting, administration, and the promotion of police officers above the rank of Assistant Commissioner.

The inauguration of the Council signals a renewed national commitment to the rule of law, public service integrity, and the strengthening of Ghana’s security institutions. In his remarks, President Mahama reaffirmed his full support for the newly constituted Council and charged its members with the critical task of restoring and upholding the integrity of the Ghana Police Service.

Vice President Naana Jane expressed her gratitude and sense of duty on her official X page, affirming her commitment to working collectively to protect communities and safeguard Ghana’s democracy.

“I am honoured to accept this solemn duty. This is not a ceremonial role; it is a moral and strategic obligation to ensure that the Ghana Police Service reflects the highest ideals of professionalism, accountability, and service to the people,” she wrote. “As Chairperson, I pledge to lead with transparency, inclusivity, and respect for justice and human dignity.”

President Mahama also swore in the other members of the Ghana Police Council. The newly appointed members include Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, who joins the Council as a representative of Parliament. Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, is also a member. The Inspector General of Police, Christian Tetteh-Yohuno, was sworn in alongside legal expert Daniel Owusu Nyampong (Esq.).

Other members include retired Commissioner of Police Nathan Kofi Boakye, Deputy Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, legal practitioner Angel Lolo (Esq.), former Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department Rose Bio Atinga, and public servant Benson Atongo Baba.

Together, they are expected to guide the Ghana Police Service with integrity, professionalism, and dedication to the safety and rights of all Ghanaians.
