The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed the NCC to block all pornographic websites nationwide, citing concerns over societal values and the negative impact of cyber pornography.
The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block access to all pornographic websites in the country immediately.
The resolution was passed during plenary on March 10, 2025, following a motion sponsored by Hon. Dalhatu Shehu Tafoki, representing Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa Federal Constituency, Katsina State. Hon.Tafoki argued that cyber pornography is a growing problem in Nigeria and urged lawmakers to take urgent action to protect societal values.
“The House notes that cyber pornography is fast becoming a global issue, and no concrete steps have been taken to address its impact in Nigeria,” he stated. “Renowned psychologists and sociologists have warned of the psychological and sociological consequences of consuming pornographic content, which include the promotion of adultery, prostitution, and other promiscuous behaviours.”
The lawmakers mandated the NCC to direct internet service providers (ISPs) to block access to porn sites and enforce sanctions against those who fail to comply. The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, warned that ISPs that violate the directive would face penalties under the Nigerian Communications Act and the National Information Technology Development Act.
The motion also referenced similar restrictions in various countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, arguing that Nigeria Should take a firm stance against obscene content.
The House tasked its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance with overseeing the implementation of the directive and reporting back within four weeks for further legislative action.
