Summary
The Minister for Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, takes proactive steps to promote women’s health and quality of life after birth.
With the intent of addressing the needs of girls and women suffering from obstetrics fistula in Nigeria, the Minister For Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, announced on Tuesday, Feb 4, 2025, that there are ongoing plans that will provide rehabilitation, reintegration, and reunification for 80 survivors of Vesico Vaginal Fistula in Katsina State.
Obstetrics Fistula is an abnormal opening between a woman’s genital tract and her urinary tract or rectum. This development is caused by prolonged and obstructed labour. This medical issue accounts for 6% of maternal deaths, and 50,000 to 100,000 women are diagnosed with obstetrics fistula globally every year.
This project will collaborate with ECOWAS and the federal government and will train 50 fistula surgeons. It will address the backlog of 100 obstetric fistula patients, schedule repairs at the National Obstetric Fistula Centre in Babbar-Ruga, Katsina, conduct needs assessments for 80 fistula patients in the state, and begin rehabilitation and reintegration efforts for the survivors.
This project is part of the Ministry and ECOWAS actions to address issues affecting women and promote the rights of girls and women.
