Summary

In celebration of International Albinism Awareness Day today, Deborah Mustapha, an aspiring model and proud person with albinism, believes representation matters and is using her platform to promote visibility and inclusion. As a contestant in Nigeria’s first-ever Albinism Beauty Pageant by Misty Glam Company (MGC), she hopes to inspire others to embrace their uniqueness, break barriers, and pursue their dreams with confidence.

Today, June 13, 2025, is International Albinism Awareness Day. Albinism is a rare, non-contagious genetic condition that occurs worldwide, affecting people regardless of ethnicity or gender. The condition is marked by a lack of melanin pigment in the hair, skin, and eyes, making people with albinism more vulnerable to sun damage, skin cancer, and visual impairments.

This year’s theme, “Demanding Our Rights: Protect Our Skin, Preserve Our Lives,” emphasises the urgent need to address preventable health risks faced by persons with albinism, particularly skin cancer, through increased awareness, regular screenings, and equitable access to sunscreen.

As part of the celebration, we spotlight Deborah Mustapha, an aspiring model with Misty Glam Company. With a unique look and a confident spirit, she’s trying to challenge stereotypes and promote inclusivity through modelling.

“I’m excited to showcase my personality and style,” she says, “inspiring others and challenging stereotypes along the way.”

Naija Feminists Media Interview with Deborah Mustapha

Why did you decide to become a model?

Modelling allows me to celebrate my uniqueness. I believe representation matters by pursuing modelling. I aim to inspire others with albinism so that we can succeed in any field and embrace our individuality.

What misconception about albinism would you like to change?

I would love to dispel the myth that albinism defines a person’s entire identity. We are individuals with unique personalities, talents, and interests beyond our physical characteristics.

What message or advice do you have for young girls with albinism?

Believe in yourself and your worth. Don’t let societal expectations define your potential. You’re unique, beautiful and deserving of love, respect, and opportunities.

What goals are you working towards in the next five years?

In the next five years, I aim to advance my modelling career, promote inclusivity and diversity in the industry, and build a personal brand. While the future is uncertain, I’m committed to staying focused and embracing opportunities that align with my passions and values.

Meanwhile, Nigeria is set to host the first Albinism Beauty Pageant. Organised by Misty Glam Company (MGC), the groundbreaking event is scheduled for August 9, 2025. For partnerships or sponsorships, reach out to MGC via email at hello@mistyglamcompany.com or WhatsApp at 0704 870 4115.
