Summary
Public figures, including Tiwa Savage, Aisha Yesufu and BBNaija’s Wanni and Handi, are speaking out and demanding justice for 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje, who died in 2018 after years of abuse. Ochanya was raped by her uncle, Mr Andrew Ogbuja, and his son, Victor Ogbuja. The abuse led to her developing Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF), a condition that caused her death.
Prominent Nigerian figures, including Tiwa Savage, Aisha Yesufu, and BB Naija’s Wanni and Handi, have joined growing calls for justice for 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje, who died in October 2018 after years of sexual abuse by her uncle, Mr Andrew Ogbuja, and his son, Victor Ogbuja.
The abuse, which began when Ochanya was eight, led to her developing Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF), a severe medical condition that ultimately caused her death.
Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu took to X (formerly Twitter) to mobilise public support and urge Nigerians to use the hashtag #JusticeForOchanya daily until justice is served.
“Nothing beats a united voice speaking at the same time! The volume cannot be lowered or unheard! Can we at 10 am every day, tweet 10 tweets each using #JusticeForOchanya, until Ochanya and her family get the justice they deserve? There shall never be rest for the wicked,” she wrote.
Singer Tiwa Savage also expressed grief and outrage, saying, “A young girl suffered unthinkable pain at the hands of those meant to protect her and lost her life because of it. We can’t stay silent.”
She further added that society must stop hiding behind family titles and tradition, insisting that Ochanya deserves justice and that every child deserves safety.
Wanni and Handi echoed similar sentiments, calling for accountability and justice not only for Ochanya but for all victims of child abuse.
At the political level, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, expressed concern over the case and urged Ochanya’s family to submit a formal petition to her National Assembly office to help reopen the case. In solidarity, Nigerian chef and Guinness World Record holder Hilda Baci also pledged N2 million and has donated about N1 million to support organisations working with rape and sexual abuse survivors in Ochanya’s memory.
