The Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the killing of a woman and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano Municipal Local Government Area.

The arrests followed an intelligence-led sting operation conducted on January 17, 2026, under the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun and supervised by the Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Bakori.

According to a statement issued on January 18, 2026, by the state police spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, three suspects were arrested in connection with the incident. They were identified as Umar Auwalu, 23, of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters; Isyaku Yakubu, also known as Chebe, 40, of Sagagi Quarters; and Yakubu Abdulaziz, also known as Wawo, 21, of Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed that Umar, a nephew of the deceased woman, was the alleged mastermind behind the attack. SP Kiyawa stated that the suspect confessed to leading the group that carried out the killings and also admitted involvement in other violent crimes within Kano, including the killing of two housewives in Tudun Yola Quarters in November 2025.

During the operation, police said they recovered items linking the suspects to the crime, including four blood-stained clothes, two mobile phones belonging to the victims, a cutlass, a club locally known as a gora, and an undisclosed amount of cash.

SP Kiyawa said the swift arrests were made possible through credible intelligence and cooperation from members of the public. He commended officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and dedication.

“The Kano State Police Command appreciates the support and cooperation of the public, which played a critical role in this success,” the spokesperson said, assuring residents of the command’s commitment to justice and security.

He added that investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspects’ activities and to identify any additional accomplices. The suspects are expected to be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
