Summary: A Lagos court has sentenced security guard Emmanuel Buchi to life imprisonment for raping a 37-year-old nurse at Greensprings School, Awoyaya, with the court finding his claims of consent false and his testimony lacking credibility.
A Lagos Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced a security guard, Emmanuel Buchi, to life imprisonment for raping a 37-year-old nurse in the school clinic. The court heard that Emmanuel and the survivor were both employees of Greensprings School, Awoyaya, Ibeju-Lekki, where the incident occurred on November 27, 2021.
Delivering judgment on January 28, 2026, Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State High Court held that the prosecution had proven the offences of rape and assault occasioning harm against the convict beyond a reasonable doubt.
He described Emmanuel as a pathological liar, noting that his attempts to deny responsibility and claim consent were inconsistent, unreliable and unsupported by evidence. The judge noted that the convict showed no remorse throughout the trial and described the circumstances of the case as deeply troubling, particularly as the offence occurred in a school environment where he was entrusted with protecting lives and property.
The court held that the survivor’s testimony was clear, consistent, credible and corroborated by two other prosecution witnesses. Medical evidence presented before the court confirmed physical injuries sustained by the survivor.
Justice Oshodi also rejected the convict’s claim that the survivor was his girlfriend, describing it as a fabrication contradicted by his own statement to the police. In that statement, Emmanuel admitted that the survivor told him to stop, but later claimed he interpreted her refusal as consent.
Emmanuel Buchi was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and three years for assault occasioning harm, with both sentences to run concurrently, and the court also ordered that his name be entered into the Lagos State Sexual Offences Register.
The prosecution stated that the offences contravened Sections 173 and 258 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
