Summary

Ammaye, a food vendor in Igawama community, Mariga Local Council, Nigeria, was lynched to death by agitated northern young men over an alleged blasphemy remark made against the Prophet Muhammad.

Ammaye, a food vendor in Igwama community, was lynched and burned to death by a mob of young men in the same community. This brutal attack was reportedly sparked by an alleged blasphemy remark made against the Prophet Muhammad.

The incident occurred on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at Mariga Local Council, Niger State. Eyewitnesses claimed Ammaye’s response to her nephew’s joke remark to marry her to fulfil the sunnah was blasphemous. This enraged the young men in the community, leaving her lynched and burned by them.

Despite being interrogated by the District Head of Kasuwan Garba and handed over to security operatives for further investigation, the men overpowered them, stoned and burned Ammaye to death.

While the community is now calm, Ammaye’s perpetrators have not been caught. Ammaye’s tragic death mirrored Deborah Samuel, who was gruesomely stoned to death by her classmates in Sokoto State in 2022 over alleged blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad.
