Summary

An agbero in Lagos brutally assaulted a commercial driver after being confronted for trying to steal her car battery, sparking public outrage and calls for justice.

A commercial driver in Lagos State has been brutally assaulted by a street tax collector, commonly known as an agbero, while trying to prevent the theft of her vehicle’s battery.

In a distressing video circulating online, the visibly injured woman tearfully recounted the assault, calling for justice and intervention from authorities. According to her, the incident occurred under a bridge near the Oriental Hotel when the assailant boarded her vehicle, claiming he was headed to the Nigerian Law School.

She said she became suspicious after noticing the man, through her rear-view mirror, attempting to remove her car battery. When she confronted him, he turned violent, beating her, tearing her clothes, and dragging her in public.

“He started beating me when I asked him where he was taking my battery,” she cried in the video. “Look at my face, look at what he did to me. He tore my clothes and battered me. Please, anyone watching this video, help me. Call human rights. Is it because I am a woman that he naked and beat me?”

The driver expressed her frustration with the lack of protection from the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Lagos State authorities despite paying all required transport levies and tickets.

She also claimed that the assailant was part of a group known for targeting commercial buses and stealing vehicle batteries and valuables.

The incident reportedly occurred around the Maroko area, after which the victim reported the matter to the police. In the video, she is seen at the Maroko Police Station, where she shows her injuries and demands justice.

The video has sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of the attacker.

One user on X, @african_unifier, wrote, “This guy should be jailed,” while @Angelofwest added, “The fact that he beats the lady to this extent… you be thief for real for real.”

Calls are now mounting for the Lagos State Government, the NURTW, and human rights bodies to take swift action and ensure justice is served.
