Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has appointed Nollywood actress and philanthropist, Mercy Johnson-Okojie, as Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy. The appointment was announced in a statement issued on February 19, 2026, and signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor.
According to the statement, Mercy Johnson is expected to leverage her public influence, communication expertise and grassroots reach to strengthen citizens’ engagement with government policies and programmes across Edo State.
Governor Okpebholo also said the appointment reflects his administration’s commitment to harnessing the credibility and public goodwill of distinguished Nigerians to advance its vision of a prosperous and united Edo State.
Mercy Johnson is one of Nollywood’s most celebrated figures, with a career spanning nearly two decades and over 200 film appearances. Her contributions to the Nigerian film industry have earned her numerous awards and nominations, including recognition at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards.
Beyond her achievements in entertainment, she is widely respected for her humanitarian and advocacy work. Through the Mercy Johnson-Okojie Foundation, she has championed initiatives focused on women empowerment, child welfare, education support and healthcare outreach. She has consistently used her platform to promote social responsibility, civic awareness and community development. Mercy Johnson previously served as Senior Special Assistant on Entertainment, Arts and Culture to former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in 2017.
The appointment is a positive step for women’s representation in leadership. Recently, Naija Feminists Media, in collaboration with AdvoKC, launched a campaign and petition urging the Edo State Government to fulfil its campaign promise of allocating 35 per cent of cabinet positions to women.
